In 2008, Barbara co-founded Modern Health Communications, a public relations and marketing communications firm dedicated to the healthcare and wellness industries. Modern Health Communications is the culmination of nearly 20 years of experience in the communications
industry. Over that time, Barbara has provided strategic communications counsel and public relations programming for a wide range of clients, primarily in the healthcare and technology sectors.
Prior to starting Modern Health Communications, Barbara served as Senior Vice President at
Porter Novelli Life Sciences (formerly FischerHealth) where she provided strategic counsel and
leadership to clients across the agency’s Medical Devices & Diagnostics, Healthcare Information
Technology and Health Services practices.
She brings a deep history in technology, medical devices and understanding of the healthcare
landscape to the challenges faced by healthcare companies. Barbara has served clients in
minimally invasive surgery, otolaryngology, orthopedics, ophthalmology/optometry, women’s
health, behavioral health and blood management as well as payors, providers and healthcare
information technology companies. Current and previous client companies included ArthroCare, Medtronic, Carl Zeiss, Conceptus, Ophthonix, PacifiCare, Cal Optima, Fair Isaac Company, Apollo Health Street, MedeFinance, Haemonetics, Imaging Healthcare Specialists and Elements Total Health.
Prior to Modern Health Communications, Kristen managed a variety of medical device, healthcare
IT and pharmaceutical accounts for Porter Novelli, including work with Amgen, Medtronic,
Kristen began her career working in public affairs for McLean Hospital, the largest psychiatric
clinical care, teaching and research facility of Harvard Medical School and an affiliate of
Massachusetts General Hospital. She then moved to New York City to work for World Health
Communications, a leading firm for continuing medical education (CME) and the development
and implementation of national community programs. Kristen has also been an independent
medical writer and worked for global award-winning public relations and marketing firm, Torre
Her expertise ranges across healthcare information technology, women’s health, medical
devices, infectious diseases (HIV, AIDS, HSV, bacterial infections) and pain management (the
Vyteris lidocaine delivery system, the Duragesic fentanyl transdermal system). Current and past
clients include Ortho-McNeil, GlaxoSmithKline, Amgen, JFK Hospital, Ipsen Pharmaceuticals, Imaging Healthcare Specialists and Elements Total Health.
Aleta has 20 years of expertise in corporate and agency-driven public relations, including medical device, healthcare IT and high-tech experience. Certified in public relations, Aleta is highly skilled at developing and implementing strategic B2B and B2C public relations programs that effectively brand and promote an organization, products or services while helping to build goodwill, reduce risks, create opportunities and enhance sales. Her expertise includes providing clients with strategic counsel for company messaging, product positioning, brand building, reputation management, and media/analyst relations.
Aleta has developed and implemented communications programs for a variety of companies and organizations: from tech start-ups to Fortune 500 corporations.
As an associate product manager for Davstar, Aleta was instrumental in the creation and implementation of communication campaigns for a variety of medical devices. She gathered competitive intelligence and conducted market research to determine a product’s unique selling propositions, key messages, and communications strategies for professional and consumer audiences. She also managed all regulatory documentation and supervised a team of nine nurses during a one-year FDA trial, resulting in FDA clearance of the DriStar® System.
Aleta has also been a news reporter and columnist for several daily newspapers. As a freelance writer, her byline has appeared in more than two-dozen publications encompassing more than 300 articles. Her writing has garnered accolades from the Associated Press, National Federation of Press Women and California Press Women.
